Vegetarians And Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding is primarily to increase the amount of muscle mass and improve muscle toning through a combination of weight training, sufficient calorie intake and rest.

Although, bodybuilding is not impossible through a vegetarian diet, people must have to work harder in comparison with those who feed on meat and other animal products.

Most important requirement of bodybuilding is sufficient calorie intake. Bodybuilders should have a diet that is rich in protein and dietary fiber so as to improve muscle strength and mass. One important source of protein for vegetarians is soy. According to the data acquired using the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score, soy contains all the 8 essential amino acids that are required for the body. Soy also contains a good amount of L-glutamate, an important nutrient that provides instant energy and helps in developing muscle mass. Lacto-vegetarians and Lacto-ovo-vegetarians can suffice their protein needs by consuming egg and milk-based products like cheese, milk and whey protein. If a person is a pesco-vegetarian, fish is a useful way of getting protein.

The next important aspect of the diet is fat. Vegetarians can resort to diets like walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and pistachio nuts to suffice the requirements of proteins and fats. All these contain high amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are considered good for health. One can even include a teaspoon of flaxseed oil in the diet. This oil is considered to be the best source of linolenic acid, which is an essential fatty acid. Foods like beans, soy, coconut, oat milk and rice milk are good source of carbohydrate that helps in gaining weight. These foods are also low in fat.
