High Calorie Vegetarian Food

The incidence of obesity or over-weight problem is less frequent among vegetarians than in non-vegetarians. This is because a vegetarian diet comprising of fruits and vegetables contributes very less calories than non-vegetarian foods comprising of meat with fat.

However, high calorie vegetarian fast food items (such as potato chips, French fries, cheese burgers and pizzas), ready to eat or heat and eat high calorie vegetarian foods and convenience vegetarian foods can be just as high in calories as any other non-vegetarian food.

Some vegetarian products and recipes may contain a lot of cheese, oil, butter or margarine (all of which occupy the top most slot of the food pyramid and are best avoided) which are all very calorie-rich and therefore, the over consumption of such types of foods can lead to obesity and excessive weight gain.

Most vegetables are high in fiber, low in fat and often a good source of vitamins and minerals. However, certain vegetables are inherently calorie rich such as Brussels sprouts, beet root, carrot, onion (especially red onions), yam, parsnip, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other varieties, especially the vegetables derived from roots of plants. But what most people do not realize is that it is the method of cooking that makes a lot of difference in the calorific value of the food. For instance, deep-frying vegetables destroys their nutrient value as well as greatly increases their calorie content. However, other healthier methods of cooking such as roasting, steaming, boiling, and grilling, help to cook these foods while preserving their natural goodness as well as the nutrient content of these foods.
