The basic ingredient is chopped fruit. According to the taste a mixture of different fruits can also be applied. Bananas, oranges, pineapples, mangos and strawberries are used most frequently.
The second ingredient is meant for making the smoothie thick. Low-fat yogurt, frozen juice concentrate, ice or frozen fruit are better to use. The quantity and quality of these ingredients determine the thickness of smoothie.
Obviously, a liquid to mix all the contents is required. Water, skimmed milk, fruit juice, or soy milk are used as a solvent. Flavored water is also a good option.
Sugar and vanilla extracts can be used according to the taste.
Generally all the ingredients, that are the fruits, liquid and thick base, are used in 1:1:2 ratios respectively. However, it all depends upon the taste and requirement. In fact, experiments can be done to change the taste.
All the above ingredients are mixed together until the mixture becomes smooth.
In order to enhance the nutritional value of the smoothie, wheat germ, ground flaxseed or Vitamin C powder can be added to the mixture. Addition of soy to a fruit smoothie increases the protein content of the smoothie.
