What Happens When Your Vitamin D Levels Are Low ?

When Vitamin D levels are low in the body, it means we have a deficiency. Vitamin D plays a vital role in human body and aides in several functions. A serious Vitamin D deficiency can result in conditions like osteoporosis and cancer and also cause rickets in children.

When the levels of Vitamin D are low, some of the most common side effects experienced are insomnia, diarrhea, muscle twitches, nervousness and anxiety. All these problems can be caused by the deficiency. When these symptoms occur without any underlying cause, then it is diagnosed as a Vitamin D deficiency.

It also causes some long term conditions like hypothyroidism, seasonal affective disorders, addiction to alcohol, and also convulsions in serious cases. Vitamin D is related to depression because it plays a role in thyroid production and any deficiency caused in it can also affect the nervous system. Also, when the levels of Vitamin D are low in the body, we gain excessive weight and other related heart problems. Conditions like obesity can lead to cardiovascular problems directly, and a person becomes prone to heart attacks and strokes. When some of the serious problems occur, it becomes very difficult to diagnose problems like vitamin D deficiency.

In order to prevent the deficiency one should get into the habit of taking early morning walks or they should have a vitamin supplement that also includes vitamin D and calcium. However, sunlight still remains the best source of Vitamin D, and the body also best absorbs it more than supplements.
