What Causes Vitamin D Deficiency ?
Vitamin D is found in sunlight and exposure to sun light helps the body to get this vitamin in a natural form. Vitamin D helps the body in absorption of calcium. Vitamin D is also a fat soluble vitamin. |
The calcium and potassium are maintained at the right levels in the body by Vitamin D. So, Vitamin D is very important for bone growth because without it the calcium does not get absorbed into the bones. Unless the bones get calcium they will not be strengthened and also grow more. Vitamin D is also helpful for strengthening the immune system.
A deficiency in Vitamin D can lead to various disorders like rickets, osteoporosis and also increases the chances of multiple sclerosis. It also increases the risk for heart diseases, blood pressure, cancer and periodontal cancer.
One of the most common causes for deficiency of Vitamin D is lack of exposure to sunlight. Early morning sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D. the ultraviolet radiation is very important for the synthesis of Vitamin D in the skin. Also, if we do not eat good fruits and vegetables that are sources of the vitamin, we can develop a deficiency. However, the body derives the average needs of Vitamin D from sunlight only. So, people who remain indoors for a long period of time and expose themselves very limited only to sunlight can develop serious deficiencies. Especially children need to be exposed to early morning or early evening sunlight.
Also, excessive usage of sunscreen products can prevent the absorption of Vitamin D.
