Protein Determination Using Biuret Test
Proteins are the building blocks of the body because they help in building muscle and maintaining the over all health. A healthy diet would include at least 40 percent of protein in the daily diet. People, who want to build muscles, usually go on a high protein diet. |
Among all food items red meats like beef, steak, and lamb are considered to have very high levels of protein. Other poultry foods like chicken breast and eggs also have very high levels of protein. Oysters and fish among the sea food have a very high content of protein. In order to determine the amount of protein in a food item the Biuret test is conducted.
The Biuret test actually detects the number of peptide bonds in a food item. Proteins are made up of peptide bonds. The results are correlated and therefore the number of proteins is determined. It is a complicated test that goes through multitude of chemical reactions to determine how many peptide bonds exist. The violet color at the end of the test determines how many proteins are there in the food item. This violet color is also sometimes noticed in red meats.
The Biuret test is not mainly conducted for identifying proteins only and the rare other complicated applications of the test. However, this is one of the best methods that can be used to determine the number of proteins in a diet. By determining the number of proteins one can optimize their diet and obtain the best results from their food intake.
