How Much Is Too Much Folic Acid ?

Vitamin B9 or folic acid or folate as it is variously called, is an immensely important nutrient for our body. Proper dosage of folic acid helps in combating diseases like cancer, premature births, stroke and other heart diseases in human body. Likewise, deficiency of this vitamin can also cause lot of diseases and disorders in human body. Thus, it is important to eat the right foods which contain the right amount of folic acid.

Folic acid containing foods include sunflower seeds, peanut butter, black eyed peas, green vegetables like lettuce, spinach, cabbages, etc. However, it is also essential to know exactly how much is actually ‘too much’ about the folic acid levels in our body. According to the RDI, the advisable amount of folic acid in a normal human being is 400 micrograms while in women who are pregnant, it should be around 600 micrograms. Though it is alright to exceed this amount by little but too much of excessive folic acid can also cause harm in our body. We may not feel the problem initially as folic acid do not have short term effect being non-toxic in nature, but in the long term, if excessive amount of it is taken repeatedly, the Vitamin B 12 absorption in our body may get impaired. This situation can arise by regular intake of breakfast cereals like bran flakes by some select brands, which contain higher dose of folic acid than advised.

Excessive consumption of folic acid can cause colorectal cancer. In the year 2000, 15,000 cases of this disease were found in Canada and the U.S alone. Studies also revealed that continuous excessive consumption of folic acid by males can cause prostate cancer in the long term. Thus, it is advisable to eat responsibly.
