What Are Carbohydrates ?

Carbohydrates are one of the principal nutrients that are essential for the normal and healthy functioning of the body. This macronutrient is responsible for giving the energy and stamina to perform different tasks.

Carbohydrates are made of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. The fundamental unit of this nutrient is saccharide. It is commonly referred to as sugar level.

Carbohydrates are classified into two broad categories – simple or bad carbs and complex or good carbs.

While simple carbs are easy to digest and provide instant energy, they are not healthy for the body. We tend to often overindulge in food items containing simple carbs. Examples of food items containing bad carbs are cakes, refined sugars, honey, milk, candy, biscuits, pizzas, soft drinks and sweets.

Complex carbohydrates take longer to digest and hence are useful for filling your stomach for long hours. The enzymes that help in digestion break down these carbs to simpler units and help in providing a steady amount of energy to the body. Cucumbers, oatmeal, potatoes, radish, apples, plums, broccoli are examples of food items that contain complex carbohydrates.

In order to understand how to regulate the carbs consumption, one has to know how carbohydrates work on our body and also choose the right food items that have high or low carbs accordingly.

The food containing carbs is broken down into simple form of sugar known as glucose. Pancreas secretes a vital hormone called insulin that transports these sugar molecules to the blood cells. These cells absorb the glucose and convert it into energy.
