Where Is Salmonella Found ?

Salmonella bacteria is a name given to a cluster of closely related 2,000 bacteria that resides in the intestinal tracts of human, other animals and even in birds. Human gets infected with this type of bacteria through consumption of food that is contaminated with these bacteria.

Mainly food items that originate from animal such as poultry, milk and beef are chief sources of these bacteria. Sometimes handling of reptiles and few pets can also transmit these bacteria to the people who come in contact with them. These bacteria remain alive in the feces of an infected person for about a week. So, poor hygiene and sanitation may further spread the disease to others. Also, if infected people come in contact with cooked food, the infection can further be passed on.

Salmonella bacteria can be destroyed if the food is cooked beyond a particular temperature because of the excess heat the bacteria tends to die on its own. Therefore, it is always advisable to cook the meats properly. Remember that the foods that are laid in the buffet should be kept at a temperature above 145 degree. Thoroughly washing of all utensils and kitchen appliances that come in contact with these bacteria can eliminate the chances of being infected. Poultry that remains at room temperature for a longer time should be discarded. Always avoid raw milk and eggs. Washing hands is a good preventive measure for salmonella infection. One may not find any change in the taste or look of a food that is infected with salmonella bacteria and hence, following all preventive measures will keep the disease at a distance.
