What Is Salmonella ?
In medical terms, salmonella is known as non typhoidial salmonellae. This is a type of bacteria which commonly causes food poisoning and lives in intestine tract of human and animal body. It normally causes illness in humans when it is spread through unhygienic and infected foods, or through animal or human feces. Approximately 1,400,000 cases of non typhoidial salmonellae are reported every year in United States. |
Prominent symptoms which can be found with non typhoidial salmonellae are diarrhea, fever, abdomen cramp and sometimes vomiting also along with bloody diarrhea. The symptoms may appear in about 12 to 72 hours after contracting infection from the typical salmonella bacteria and generally lasts about 4 to 7 days. This normal salmonella can be cured without much assistance, and generally patients recover without any treatment. However, occasionally non typhoidial salmonellae may result in severe illness if not treated early.
It is paramount that all the precautions are taken and a medical practitioner is consulted or else the infection may get increased resulting in severe illness. This severe illness generally occurs in small children or the elderly individuals where the immune system has not fully developed or has been deteriorated because of old age.
Salmonella infection can be contracted through undercooked poultry food like meat etc because of infected animal feces. Additionally, this also may contract through fruits and vegetables that are grown through contaminated farms or contaminated water. The individuals working in these farms are also probable carriers because of the unhygienic and unclean environment.
