What Is Listeria ?

Listeria or Listeriosis is an infectious disease which attacks people who have a weak immune system. Listeria Monocytogenes is the bacterium responsible for this infection. In those individuals who have comparatively a healthy immune system the bacteria is not capable of multiplying and spreading.

Victims are generally those who possess a weak immune system and are exposed to the infection. This type of infection is mainly related to food. Hence, is similar to other food borne diseases. It can be reduced by following good food handling procedures.

Listeria Monocytogenes type of infectious bacteria normally originates directly from soil, water, mud, fodder, cattle feed, and indirectly present in vegetables which are grown in contaminated soil, fertilizers, animal who consumes infected feed and fodder, dairy products which are obtained from contaminated animals, Meat which are also taken from these animals. Listeria occurs when people consume infected food in the form of unwashed raw vegetables, uncooked or under cooked meat, unpasteurized milk and its products such as soft cheese. Also, when people work with infected animals and do not wash their hands thoroughly, they are vulnerable to getting infected.

People who suffer from Listeria shows symptoms like headache, whole body muscle ache, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In extreme cases, it might also affect the nervous system resulting in stiff neck, headaches, confusion, and convulsions and unable to balance. In pregnant women, this can cause miscarriages, still births and there are chances of passing on the infection to the newly born baby. Pregnant women ought to be careful while eating and must ensure they are consuming the right food.
