E Coli Facts

Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria are naturally found in the intestines of cattle, poultry and other animals. Once infected, it results in severe ill health. General symptoms can be as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea or fever.

Symptoms can begin almost immediately after eating infected food but actually may affect till about a month a month or more. In some people, particularly young children, aged persons, pregnant women and individuals with poor immune systems, this can be significantly dangerous. Additionally, the infected ones become the carrier and spread the disease to others.

Normally, E. coli is cured within 7 to 10 days. However, up to 15 percent of them develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is an abnormal type of kidney failure and blood disorder, and can be fatal.

E coli bacteria every so often contaminate meats in abattoirs despite safety measures. Fruits and vegetables can also get contaminated by the bacteria when they are being grown due to usage of poor quality manure, contaminated water and improper hygiene practices of the farm personnel.

E colibacteria are most often spread among human beings in which infected animals and people are carriers. Hence, good hygiene, correct food handling practices are must to avoid foodborne illness. If a person is infected with E. coli bacteria or any other gastrointestinal illness avoid preparation for others. Do keep pets away from food storage and preparation areas.

Food products which generally are responsible for food borne illnesses are grounded beef, raw fruits and vegetables including sprouts, contaminated water, raw milk, milk products made from raw milk, unpasteurized fruit juices etc.
