What Causes Diarrhea ?

The recent report from the WHO reveals that globally around 3.5 million of deaths are occurring due to diarrhea and about 80 percent of the affected are children below 5 years of age. It has been noticed that children are more prone to diarrhea because even a little amount of loss of fluids leads to dehydration as compared to adult.

According to medical fraternity there exist five varieties of diarrhea.

  • Secretory diarrhea -- This is caused by a cholera which is emitted by a bacterium known as Vibrio cholera. In this case the guts usually get more fluid due to some functional damage.
  • Osmotic diarrhea -- Drawing of excess water inside the bowel due to diseases like celiac, pancreatic or use of laxatives. Some times excess amount of magnesium, vitamin C, undigested lactose and fructose can also advance diarrhea.
  • Hypermotility diarrhea -- When food passes at a greater speed from esophagus to the bowel it causes less absorption of food by the body. This results when patients undergo either surgery of vagus nerve or diabetic who are undergoing neuropathy.
  • Inflammatory diarrhea -- It is caused by some form of infections due to bacteria, virus, parasite or some malfunctioning of immune system which results in irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Dysentery -- Presence of blood in the stool is an indicative of dysentery. It happens because of excessive secretion of water by anti diuretic hormone from the posterior pituitary gland.

Apart from the above reasons diarrhea may happen because of the consumption of stale and infected food. Some times side effects of few medicines can also trigger diarrhea such as antibiotics.
