What Causes Black Diarrhea ?

Presence of blood in the stool is termed as black diarrhea. This presence of blood in the stool could be due to many reasons. It is for sure that black diarrhea is not a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome. The change in the color of the stool is because of the fact that the content of the iron in a black diarrhea changes.

The color black indicates that the iron content is more. The bleeding can occur anywhere between the esophagus to small bowel and colon hence, when a patient visits a doctor he normally gets a thorough check of the patient done. Various tests are being carried out to ascertain the actual cause of bleeding.

Various tests that the doctor advices are an endoscope test which is a procedure in which a pipe having a small camera is inserted from the mouth and it takes the photographs of esophagus, duodenum and stomach. Few other tests include blood test, stool occult blood test to search for the presence of blood in the stool. In case if nothing is found in these tests then some other extensive tests are carried out to find the actual place of bleeding. These could be either an Enteroscopy which means a special X-ray, or CT scan of the small bowel or lastly a colonoscopy to find out blood stains in the colon.

Black diarrhea in medical terminology is called as Melaena. It happens due to bleeding in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and colon or in the small bowel.
