Food Poisoning Vs Flu

The most generally observed indications of stomach flu and food poisoning are almost same, mainly being nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, headache, cramps in abdomen, and uneasiness in stomach. Both these health problems generally make us dehydrated and exhausted. Because of their similarity, it is tricky to identify the actual one between the two.

A comparison between food poisoning and stomach flu will give us the detailed data.

Food Poisoning: In medical terms, food poisoning is referred to as food-borne illness since it is caused due to consumption of contaminated food. Food poisoning should be treated at the earliest because if it is prolonged it might lead to further complications. The symptoms of food poisoning start surfacing within 24 hours after the contaminated food is consumed.

Stomach Flu: Stomach flu results due to the influence of viruses. This in medical term is called gastroenteritis. Stomach flu occurs because of intake of food that is either infected with viruses or if food is exposed to poor sanitation conditions. The virus enters the body through esophagus and attacks the intestinal tracts. The condition of flu doesn’t become very severe but it might cause dehydration due to frequent watery passing of stools and makes a person weak. The symptoms of flu start appearing after few days of virus entrance inside the body. It might take a day or 10 days for the signs of flu.

Treatment:

In both the cases, dehydration is a common symptom which turns the person affected pale and weak. Hence, the primary requirement is to consume lots of fluid in the form of water, juices and various soups. Consumption of food that can trigger metabolism and cleanse up the system would help in recovering fast. Food safety is the first measure one must adhere to avoid such illnesses.
