Should You Leave Shell On When Grilling Shrimp ?

Shrimps bought from the market should not smell of ammonia. When you buy frozen shrimps, soak them in salted water made from 1 to 2 tablespoon of salt dissolved in 1 quart of fresh water.

When you grill the shrimp you can use the direct heating method on a medium or a hot grill. It is advisable to leave the shell on while grilling the shrimp as you would be able to prevent the meat from drying out.

However, the shell of the shrimp should be slit so that when you season the meat within. The marinade would penetrate through the meat. Place the slit at the back of the shell so that the juices would easily enter and cover the meat uniformly. Marinating with barbecue sauce makes it taste quite delicious. You can also season it with Old Bay and melted butter.

The shrimp is quite thin and hence, cooking is completed quite fast. The shrimp should be removed from the grill when it becomes opaque, and you need to be prepared in order to avoid overcooking the meat.

Since the shrimp is small, it may easily fall out of the grill. Skewers can be used to prevent this. You may also put the shrimps in a grill basket while grilling. It is advisable to use two skewers so that the shrimp does not start spinning. Wooden skewers should be soaked 30 minutes before you start the grilling process.

Before grilling, baste the shrimp with butter. This would prevent the meat from drying out. It would take about 3 to 4 minutes to grill each side depending upon the thickness of the shrimp.
