Cooking Chicken Internal Temperature
The duration at which chicken takes to bake in an oven will depend on baking temperature. Generally it is 350° F for 30 to 40 minutes. If using an instant digital thermometer, the internal temperature should be 165° to 170° F. |
A meat thermometer is essential to find out if chicken is cooked. Seeing if the juices run clear is not a very reliable method. The thermometer should be inserted into the thickest part i.e. the thigh. Care should be taken when inserting that it does not touch fat, bone or gristle. Chicken should read 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the meat continues to cook even after it is removed from the heat source, it can be taken off a little before it is fully done. Internal temperature will rise about 5 to 10 degrees in the first few minutes when it is off the heat.
The need for using a food thermometer arises because of the risk of food-borne illnesses. The thermometer helps to read accurately if the meat is done. Overcooking is also avoided.
Certain people are more vulnerable to food-borne illnesses like pregnant women, babies, the elderly and those with a weak immune system.
The following are some of the bacteria associated with chicken. Salmonella enteritidis is found in the intestinal tracts of warm blooded animals. Staphylococcus aureus is carried in nasal passages or in throats. Campylobacter causes diarrhea in humans.
Hence, by using a thermometer, such illnesses will be warded off and one is able to get safe, delicious and healthy food.
